Draped Bust Cent

The Draped Bust Large Cent (1796–1807) features the elegant Gilbert Stuart portrait of Liberty. This era is a goldmine for variety hunters, containing the legendary 1799 and 1804 key dates. Our guide breaks down the Sheldon (S) numbers, “Comet” varieties, and the distinct die states of the early 19th century.

The Era of the Rarity

The Draped Bust Large Cent features a design based on a sketch by the famous artist Gilbert Stuart. This era is the “Wild West” of Large Cent collecting. It contains two of the most legendary rarities in the entire copper series: the 1799 and the 1804.

Collector’s Note: Because the 1799 and 1804 are so valuable, “altered dates” are common. This category page should serve as an educational hub for identifying authentic key dates. Look for the “Comet” variety of 1803 or the “Fraction Bar” errors. High-grade Draped Busts are exceptionally rare, as these were the workhorses of the early American economy.
