Matron Head Cent

Also known as the “Coronet Head,” the Matron Head (1816–1839) is the longest-running Large Cent design. This sub-category covers the “Middle Dates” of US copper, including the 1817 “15 Stars” error, the “Matron Head Modified” (1835–1839), and the complex overdates of the 1820s.

The Workhorse of the Middle Dates

After the Mint fire of 1816, the “Matron Head” was introduced. This series is often overlooked by beginners but beloved by advanced specialists. It covers the “Middle Dates” of Large Cents. The design features a more mature Liberty with her hair tied in a bun, secured by a coronet.

Collector’s Note: This category is a paradise for “Overdate” hunters. The 1839/6 and the 1817 “15 Stars” variety are the highlights. Because these were minted in higher quantities than the early coppers, this is the perfect entry point for a new collector to own a 200-year-old coin in decent condition for a reasonable price.
